One of the oldest universities in Siberia - Dorji Banzarov Buryat State University (BSU) - was founded in 1932 as Buryat State Teacher Training Institute. 1995 saw a merger of this institute with the Ulan-Ude branch of Novosibirsk State University, and the same year September, 30 the Russian President signed a decree on the establishment of Buryat State University . Currently, BSU is a backbone educational institution which trains personnel for all bodies and establishments in education, science, management, economy, healthcare, social sphere, etc. One of the fundamental principles that BSU adheres to is implementation of a continuing education system in training academic and teaching professionals: from high schools and vocational training colleges to the university, postgraduate, and doctoral degree levels.Today the University comprises seven faculties:

BSU possesses the largest intellectual assets in the Baikal region and carries out fundamental research of almost every kind. Many of its departments conduct applied and innovative research. The University has developed world-class scientific schools in the fields of Condensed Matter Physics, Botany, Ornithology, History, Mongolian studies, Sociology, Philosophy, Literature, Linguistics, Education Theory.
BSU cooperates closely with leading Russian universities, institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Education, and a number of international organizations engaged in education, science, culture and technology. The university has managed to keep and develop the best traditions and practices accumulated by its predecessors. Another important factor in the university's successful development is the constant search for non-standard solutions that enable the university to improve its facilities, attract highly qualified faculty, and overcome numerous challenges that Russian education has been facing in recent years.
BSU has a number of international language testing centers, such as the DAAD German Language Testing Center "DaF", Russian as a Foreign Language testing center (RFL Department), English Testing Center that functions in cooperation with the English Exams Department of Cambridge University (UK). The results of Cambridge exams are recognized by all educational institutions of the European Union and the Commonwealth, as well as many by colleges and universities in the United States and other countries, and official bodies and employers around the world.
During its history, BSU has trained more than 55 000 highly qualified professionals. Among our graduates are academicians, government ministers, renowned scientists and cultural luminaries, CEOs and professionals in different industries of Siberia and the Far East.
Currently, about 10 000 students study at BSU in 113 majors, including 40 specialist, 44 bachelor, 21 master programmes, and 8 vocational college programmes. Scientific and teaching staff training is conducted through the system of postgraduate professional education in 4 doctoral and 46 postgraduate majors, as well as in 19 internship and 6 medical residency majors. Today, the University educational complex includes 23 secondary schools of Buryatia, Ust-Orda and Aginsk Buryat districts, 9 centers of pre-University training, 4 professional lyceums, 5 colleges.
The University trains 305 postgraduate students and 17 doctoral fellows. There are 8 dissertation councils in 15 scientific specialties and 9 branches.
The University's facilities are constantly improving. With the area of educational and sports facilities constantly expanding, today BSU has 11 academic buildings, 7 dormitories, the House of Sports, a stadium, a sports camp at Shchuchye lake, a boarding house and sports complex at lake Baikal, and a publishing house.
